Rayse walked into the precinct office of the Zygerus Circuit Security. She had been summoned to the office by her commanding officer, Commander Urether, for a new assignment and to meet her new partner. Rayse had been a beat cop, walking the streets of Zygerus in quadrant three, zone sixty-five, between Alsuria and Dearen, and Fodge and Hilkanz Streets in the suburb of Miltzenax.
Nize and Corialis approached a door at the end of the hall marked ‘Meeting Hall’. Corialis had a smug expression on his face as he said, “See. I told you so.”
Nize growled as he said, “You got lucky.” He did get lucky. Corialis had selected a hallway at random from the foyer that just happened to lead to the right place. There was still two-thirds of a chance, he could have been wrong. It bothered Nize that he had guessed correctly. Working with Corialis would just get more impossible with the albino holding it over his head. Nize said, “Since you found it, you get to go in first.”
“Hey,” Corialis objected. “I’m the brains of this operation. You’re the brawn. You go first.”
Nize guffawed. “And you’re out of your mind. I’m the full package,” Nize replied coldly. Nize has been a mercenary longer than Corialis had. In fact, he had found Corialis on the streets of Zygerus a few years ago and offered him a job. He has regretted it ever since. The only reason Nize kept him around was he brought some unique skills to the table. Corialis could get anyone to do what he wanted through some freakish hypnotic mumbo-jumbo. “Your ego is starting to get out of hand, Corialis. You’re just the hired help.”
“Is that right?” Corialis said with his anger growing once again.
“I’ll remember that, Nize,” Corialis replied. “I’d like to see how far you’d get without me?” He turned his back on his partner and reached for the placator on his hip with one hand and the door control with the other. The door slid open and Corialis leapt into the room with his placator drawn. “No one move, and no one will get hurt.”
Nize lumbered in behind him with a pair of placators in handgun mode with them set to wide dispersal. He waved the weapons around the packed meeting room, making sure he had the room covered.
There were twenty people seated around the massive board room table. The gentleman at the head of the table rose to his feet, obviously inconvenienced by the interruption. “What is the meaning of this?”
“Hedridge Masblitz, CEO of Ihdris Enterprises?” Corialis asked. “You’re coming with us. Now!”
