Rayse walked into the precinct office of the Zygerus Circuit Security. She had been summoned to the office by her commanding officer, Commander Urether, for a new assignment and to meet her new partner. Rayse had been a beat cop, walking the streets of Zygerus in quadrant three, zone sixty-five, between Alsuria and Dearen, and Fodge and Hilkanz Streets in the suburb of Miltzenax.
Rayse stepped out of the locker room dressed in her brand new Investigator uniform. The black and grey camouflaged outfit with the armored shoulder guard, kneepads, tall boots, and endowed with ample straps, clasps, and buckles looked good on her. She approached her partner and spun around to give Xaxyn a complete look at the fit and cut of the uniform. “How do I look?”
Xaxyn smiled approvingly when she saw her. “It looks like you were made for that uniform.” Xaxyn was a little envious of average sized people, like Rayse.
Rayse laughed and said, “It helps that it’s self-tailoring as well.” Rayse joined her partner. “What’s next?”
Xaxyn led Rayse away from the locker room to the precinct’s armory. A window with steel bars, bulletproof glass, and energy dampening technology was manned by a bored woman that looked like she would rather be anywhere else. Xaxyn stepped up to the window but the top of the biomech’s head was still below the bottom of it. Xaxyn tapped a hidden control in her legs and activated the leg extension upgrades the biomechoid had purchased a few cycles back.
In response, the soft sound of hydraulics and machinery was heard as the three and a half foot living doll’s legs twisted, stretched, and extended at several points increasing its height by approximately twelve inches. , They enabled Xaxyn to see over the counter and into the face of the bored armory attendant.
“Oh!” said the on-duty armory officer, surprised to see Xaxyn peak over the window’s ledge. “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there, Investigator Xaxyn.”
“Story of my life,” Xaxyn whispered with a sigh. Xaxyn’s size always seemed to be an issue. Xaxyn wished that the biomechanoid designers on Generator would have had the foresight to have scaled its generation better, but alas, it was not so. When Xaxyn saved up enough shares, the tiny biomechanoid hoped to get a few more upgrades that would increase her height on a more permanent basis, as well as make it look less child-like. However, those were expensive upgrades and would take quite some time to save up for.
Turning her focus back to the Armory Officer, Xaxyn said, “Jespah, I’d like to introduce you to Rayse, my new partner.”
Rayse had been standing beside the window and when Xaxyn called for her, she stepped in front of the window so she could be more easily seen. “It’s nice to meet you, Jespah,” Rayse said with an uncontrollable grin lighting up her face..
Jespah smiled half-heartedly. “So what I can do for you today?”
“Rayse has just been promoted,” Xaxyn explained. “I’m getting her outfitted with her equipment.”
Jespah nodded. “That explains the new uniform.” She grabbed a stack of paper and passed it through the shielded window to Xaxyn. “I’ll need her to sign these forms, in triplicate.” Jespah said, punctuating the statement by slapping a stylus on top of the stack. She stepped away from the window and started gathering the equipment Rayse would need as an investigator.
Rayse picked up the stack of digital paper and flipped through them. With the electronic pen, she began signing her name and initialing each page as she looked them over. Most of them were instructions explaining the proper use of the equipment; along with rules, regulations, and procedures; and variety of wavers for covering everything from misuse, to accidental injury and death. She was just finishing up when Jespah returned with a cardboard box filled with equipment. She accepted the paperwork from Rayse before going through the box of stuff she had for her.
Jespah pulled out each piece of equipment from the box and named it as she placed it on the counter between them. The first item was a cylinder that looked more like a cattle prod than a billy-club. “Standard issue placator.” Rayse picked it up and tapped a control, bringing it to life with an electrical hum before transforming it into a handheld pistol with the press of another button. A second tap of the same control returned the placator into its cylindrical wand form. Rayse slipped it into her belt as Jespah pulled out a second piece. “Standard Issue comm device.” Rayse snatched up the small rectangle and slipped it into a pouch near her unarmored shoulder. She tapped it on and off to ensure that it was operational. The chirps confirmed that it was working. The next device Jespah removed from the box was a series of spheres, cubes, cylinders, and cones arranged in pouches. “Medkit, repair kit, extra power cells, and handheld scanners.” Rayse scooped up the pouches and clipped them into her belt. “Adjustable electromagnetic handcuffs,” Jespah said pulling out a several pair of silver bracelets. Rayse slipped the cuffs into a pouch behind her back. Finally, Jespah pulled out a six pack of small canisters. “Be careful with these. They’re used for riot control. You really don’t want to be anywhere near them when they’re activated.” Rayse picked up the cannisters and slipped them into pouches in her pant legs. Jespah put the crate away.
Xaxyn smiled and said, “Come on, Rayse. Now, that you’re loaded for bear, we should get going.”
“Where to?” Rayse asked.
“I think we’ll take it easy and start off with a patrol around Generator.”
